Career Coaching - "5 Whys" technique

In this blog, I want to explain how I use the 5Whys technique to help coachee explore their career.

Let's take an example where the coachee is still deciding which career to choose. We'll use the "5 Whys" technique to explore their situation:

The initial question could be, "Why am I unsure about which career to choose?"

Ask "Why?": Ask the coachee why they are uncertain about their career choice. The answer could be, "Because I'm not sure what aligns with my interests and passions."

Ask "Why?" Again: Dig deeper by asking why they are uncertain about their interests and passions. They might respond, "Because I haven't had enough exposure to different industries and career options to know what truly excites me."

Continue Asking "Why?": Keep probing by asking why they haven't had enough exposure to different career options. They might reveal, "Because I haven't actively sought out opportunities to explore different fields and gain hands-on experience."

Reach the Core Answer: Finally, after several rounds of asking "Why?", you reach the core answer to the 5th "Why?" question. In this case, it could be, "Because I haven't prioritized self-exploration and taking proactive steps to gain exposure to various careers, limiting my understanding of what truly resonates with me."

By using the "5 Whys" technique in this scenario, you help the coachee delve into the underlying reasons behind their uncertainty. This exploration can uncover valuable insights, such as the need to actively seek out career exploration opportunities, engage in self-reflection, and take proactive steps to gain exposure to different fields. Ultimately, it can guide them towards making more informed career decisions aligned with their interests and passions.

Let me use this technique on myself and see my 5 whys.

First - "Why did I choose to become a career coach?"

Second - Ask "Why?": "Because I enjoy helping individuals discover their passions and achieve their professional goals."

Third - Ask "Why?" Again:"Because I find it fulfilling to witness the positive impact I can have on someone's life and their journey towards personal and professional growth."

Fourth - Continue Asking "Why?": "Because I believe that when individuals find fulfilment in their careers, it positively impacts their overall well-being and contributes to a happier and more fulfilling society."

Fifth - Reach the Core Motivation: "Why?" "Because becoming a career coach allows me to leverage my passion, expertise, and experience to empower others in crafting meaningful, satisfying, and successful careers."
