Job, Career, and Calling: Navigating Your Path with Skills, Values, and Passion

In the quest for professional fulfillment, individuals often encounter three distinct paths: the job, the career, and the calling. These paths are not mutually exclusive, and understanding how skills, values, and passion influence each one can guide you towards a more purposeful and satisfying professional journey. As a career coach, I'll walk you through these paths and how to make informed decisions.

1. The Job - Skills in Action:
A job is typically a means to an end – a way to earn a living. It may not always align with your deepest passions, but it allows you to utilize your skills and expertise. Here's how to approach your job:

- Skills: Emphasize your strengths and develop new skills within your current role.
- Values: Find aspects of your job that align with your values, even if it's not your dream position.
- Passion: Look for opportunities to infuse passion into your daily tasks, making your job more fulfilling.

2. The Career - Values in Focus:
A career goes beyond a job; it represents a long-term commitment to a particular field or industry. It's essential to align your career with your core values. Here's how:

- Skills: Continuously refine your skills to excel in your chosen career.
- Values: Reflect on your values and ensure your career aligns with them.
- Passion: Seek roles and projects within your career that genuinely excite you, leveraging your passion to drive success.

3. The Calling - Passion with Purpose:
A calling is a career that resonates deeply with your passions and values. It's a rare and profound alignment that brings immense satisfaction. Here's how to identify your calling:

- Skills: Identify the skills that you are exceptionally good at and passionate about.
- Values: Define your core values and seek a career that reflects them.
- Passion: Discover what genuinely excites you and explore careers that align with your passions.

Balancing the Three:
It's crucial to recognize that these paths can overlap. A job can evolve into a career, and a career can become a calling over time. To find the right balance:

- Skills: Keep honing your skills throughout your journey.
- Values: Regularly assess your values and ensure they align with your current path.
- Passion: Continually explore new interests and incorporate them into your professional life.

Making Informed Decisions:
When deciding which path to follow, consider the following questions:

- Skills: What skills do you excel at? Which do you enjoy using the most?
- Values: What principles and values matter most to you in your work?
- Passion: What activities or pursuits ignite your enthusiasm and curiosity?

By aligning your answers with your career choices, you'll be better equipped to make informed decisions.

As a career coach, my advice is this: Don't feel pressured to fit into a specific category. Understand that your professional journey is dynamic and can evolve. Continuously assess your skills, values, and passions to make informed choices that lead to personal and career growth. Whether you find yourself in a job, a career, or a calling, remember that each path has its own merits and can contribute to a fulfilling and successful life.

Career Coaching - "5 Whys" technique

In this blog, I want to explain how I use the 5Whys technique to help coachee explore their career.  Let's take an example where the coachee is still deciding which career to choose. We'll use the "5 Whys" technique to explore their situation: The initial question could be, "Why am I unsure about which career to choose?" Ask "Why?": Ask the coachee why they are uncertain about their career choice. The answer could be, "Because I'm not sure what aligns with my interests and passions." Ask "Why?" Again: Dig deeper by asking why they are uncertain about their interests and passions. They might respond, "Because I haven't had enough exposure to different industries and career options to know what truly excites me." Continue Asking "Why?": Keep probing by asking why they haven't had enough exposure to different career options. They might reveal, "Because I haven't actively sought out opport...
